Subjects

What we work on together

Each subject starts from the gaps, not the syllabus page number. We rebuild the foundations first, then practise the exam skills that turn understanding into marks.

Mathematics

Lower secondary to advanced level

From fractions that never quite clicked to calculus that suddenly feels fast, we slow down, find the sticking point and practise until it becomes routine.

  • Number, algebra and ratio
  • Geometry and trigonometry
  • Statistics and problem solving

English

Language and literature

Close reading, confident essays and clear writing. Students learn to plan an argument, choose evidence and say what they mean in fewer words.

  • Essay structure and analysis
  • Set texts and unseen passages
  • Creative and persuasive writing

Sciences

Biology, chemistry and physics

Concepts first, then the calculations and long-answer questions. Diagrams, worked examples and short recall drills keep ideas from fading.

  • Core concepts and key terms
  • Required practicals explained
  • Data, graphs and calculations
A tall stack of well-used books with worn spines
Good notes, good questions and a plan that changes as your child does.
How sessions work

A clear plan from the very first week

No guesswork about what happens in a lesson or why. Every student follows the same simple rhythm, adjusted to their pace.

  1. A first chat

A short, free conversation with parent and student about goals, worries and upcoming exams.

  2. A baseline session

Relaxed diagnostic work that shows where understanding is secure and where it wobbles.

  3. A weekly plan

Focused lessons that mix new material, recall practice and exam-style questions.

  4. Progress notes

A brief written update after each block of lessons, so everyone knows what has improved and what comes next.

Formats

Lessons that fit your week

Choose the format that suits your family. Many students mix them, going online during term and meeting in person before exams.

Most flexible

Online lessons

Live one-to-one sessions with a shared whiteboard and worked examples saved afterwards for revision.

By arrangement

Home visits

In-person lessons at your kitchen table, for students who focus best with paper, pencils and someone beside them.

Exam season

Revision blocks

Short, intensive runs of sessions before mocks or finals, built around past-paper practice and timing.

About Hazel

A calm room for hard questions

Most students aren't bad at a subject. They're missing one small step that everything else depends on.

I tutor because I love the moment a student stops guessing and starts reasoning. My lessons are unhurried but purposeful: we talk through mistakes openly, keep a tidy record of what's been learned, and practise until the new skill holds under exam pressure.

I work with students who are catching up, keeping pace or aiming higher. What they share is a wish to feel less anxious and more in control of their own learning. You can read more about how that works in how sessions work.

  • Structured
  • Honest feedback

Questions

Before you get in touch

Anything not covered here can be answered in the free first chat.

Is there a trial before committing to regular lessons?

Yes. After the first chat, the baseline session works as a trial. You can decide afterwards whether weekly lessons feel right, with no obligation to continue.

How long is each session?

Most lessons run for an hour. Younger students sometimes start with shorter sessions, and revision blocks can be longer when practising full papers.

What happens if we need to miss a lesson?

Life happens. Let me know as early as you can and we'll find another time that week wherever possible. Cancellation terms are shared clearly before lessons begin.

How will I know whether it's working?

You'll receive short written progress notes after each block of lessons, covering what's improved, what still needs work and the plan for the next few weeks.

When should we start before an exam?

Earlier is calmer. A term or more gives time to fix foundations, but short revision blocks can still make a meaningful difference closer to the date.
